VA Community Based Outpatient Clinic

Sidock Group, Inc. provided Architectural and Engineering Design and Construction Documents for a renovation and expansion of an existing commercial building for use as a walk-in medical clinic. The renovated building is a single story, approximately 29,000 SF medical office building. This adaptive reuse of an existing grocery store required a major addition in order to meet the design and program requirements. The original structure, a concrete masonry and steel-framed building, was completely gutted and renovated/rehabilitated. A covered drop-off canopy and raised entry feature provides height variances and serves as a focal point emphasizing the main entrance. The expanded entrance feature creates a sense of place and provides space for a memorial/healing garden.
Physical security, patient care and circulation, and meeting stringent client agency requirements presented additional challenges that SGI resolved exceptionally well while also creating an exciting and inviting space.
The design maintained the existing building shell and repurposed the existing construction as much as feasible to reduce the carbon footprint and reduce costs. Careful design preserved the client’s sightlines and program space. Site design combined 5 separate parcels for the expanded building footprint, parking lots, driveways and vehicle circulation. Landscape design provided the required enhanced security features while also providing low-impact stormwater management as well as an inviting aesthetic. Design began mid-year 2018 and the facility was receiving patients in early 2020.
