DTMB/DMVA Alpena Armory Renovation

Sidock Group, Inc. provided Design and Construction Administration services for the repair and maintenance renovation of the Alpena Army National Guard Armory located at the Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center (CRTC), Alpena, Michigan. The Armory is co-located on an Air National Guard installation, requiring close coordination with multiple service branches and adherence to base security protocols throughout design and construction. The facility supports military firefighter training, unit drilling, and other operational readiness activities.
The $2.5 million project included interior renovations and exterior site improvements to modernize the facility and support mission requirements. Exterior improvements consisted of site paving, grading, and implementation of force protection and anti-terrorism measures in accordance with applicable Department of Defense criteria.
Interior renovations included reconfiguration of existing toilet and shower facilities, renovation of administrative offices, lobby, corridors, and classrooms, and provision of a lactation room. The project also included replacement of an existing vault door and integration with the existing Advantor intrusion detection system. Mechanical system upgrades included modifications to existing HVAC systems, reconfiguration of ductwork to support renovated spaces, and installation of a gas detection system within the new apparatus garage.
Electrical and life safety improvements included installation of energy-efficient LED lighting and controls throughout the facility, reconfiguration of power, data, and fire alarm systems in renovated areas, and upgrades to the building automation and HVAC control systems.
Program-specific improvements to support firefighter operations included upgrades to firefighting training equipment, construction of a detox room and detox sauna, breathing air system improvements, and the addition of fitness and caged storage areas on a new mezzanine level. Existing personal protective equipment storage areas were modified and reconfigured to accommodate the revised layout and operational needs. The existing assembly hall was renovated and converted into a four-bay apparatus garage to support military firefighting vehicles.
Design was completed in late 2024. Construction commenced in early 2025, with final completion anticipated by March 2026.
