2019 FUTURE CITY COMPETITION
For the 2nd year in a row, the University Prep Science and Math Middle School participated in the Future City competition coordinated by the Engineering Society of Detroit. David Bussell, Sr. Project Consultant from the Novi office mentored the 8th grade team. The students won a special award for Best Engineered Project. This is the 2nd year that David has worked with the school, and the 3rd year overall mentoring middle schools in the Future City competition. Future City is a comprehensive design and planning competition where the students use a computer program to simulate the functionality of their planned city. The students then write a comprehensive essay on the features of their city, particularly features that support the annual theme. This year’s theme was “Powering Our Future”, the design of resilient power distribution systems that can withstand natural disasters. The students then develop an in-depth presentation and city model to be displayed on the day of the competition.
